Emily was a freelance feature writer and editor for an alternative bi-weekly magazine published in Boston. She edited several special sections, including the ski section and a technology issue, where she interviewed several prominent Internet entrepreneurs. She also wrote feature stories on Chinese dissidents and a pair of doctors/sisters Laura and Jennifer Berman working on sex research for women, among other stories.

From 1993 to 1997, Emily was a staff writer and editor for the trade magazine, Natural Foods Merchandiser. The Merchandiser served retailers, distributors and manufacturers of the booming natural foods trade during the beginning of its hey-day, with information, market research and feature stories to help readers improve their businesses.
