Recent Project: Your Horse Sports

Welcome to Your Horse Sports. This section of my website is born from years of magazine writing and reading about the horse world, and specifically the discipline of dressage, of which I have lately become obsessed.

The magazines (of which there are only two--Dressage Today and the USDF Magazine) don't get it (in my humble opinion): Most of us, say, 99.99 percent, are not going to the Olympics, nor do we aspire to. Neither do we care particularly about Lisa Wilcox's success (do the magazines seem particularly obsessed with her to you?). One friend recently described DT (for which I sometimes write, full disclosure) as "People Magazine for DQs." I think she hit the nail on the head.

We "normal" riders (say 95% of us) who muddle along in training, first and, heck, maybe even second level, make up the majority of riders. We struggle along with weekly or monthly lessons, trying to coordinate the inside leg with the outside rein with the straightness of the neck, all the while spending eight ours a day hunched over a desk to pay for it all. Sometimes the magazines seem to miss the real reason we do this: Because we love horses. Our goals are simple: We'd like to score decently at the local horse show, and figure out what this whole "harmony" thing is about.
